RUSSIAN ARTISTS TO SING AT UCSD Dmitry Mezhevich and Victoria Medvedeva, actors of famed Moscow Taganka Theater, are singing on UCSD campus coming Tuesday. Mezhevich was a close friend and co-worker of two prominent Russian songwriters, late Alexander Galich and Vladimir Vysotsky. He wrote music to the well-known song by Galich, "Uezzhaete -- uezzhaite" (If you leave, leave), and worked as a scenic partner of Vysotsky, singing artist's songs "better than the author", as Vysotsky confessed. Both Mezhevich and Medvedeva play old style Russian seven-stringed guitars and know a host of lyrical songs which are perhaps the best thing left from Russia's 50's and 60's, but which are very rarely heard outside it. In their quality of actors, they maintain a close contact with the audience and use expressive body language while singing. Dmitry Mezhevich and Victoria Medvedeva represent the state of the art in Russian performance. They are a must see choice for everyone interested in classical Russian culture. To facilitate understanding, song lyrics will be translated to English on the fly, as it was done for Dulov's concert at the Int'l Center this May. The concert takes place at the Visual Arts Performance Space (Russel lane north of VA Hospital and south of Literature Building) Tuesday October 22, 1996, at 7 p.m.; admission is $10 (undergraduate $7). Tickets can be reserved at http://ostankino.ucsd.edu/concerts/tickets.html, or by phone, 534-2129, 270-4830. For video clips of three songs see http://blandings.ucsd.edu:443/~dberansk/concerts/mm/. For more info, see http://math.ucsd.edu/~broido. ============================== Please let us know if you want to attend Wednesday Oct.23 event on campus featuring Mezhevich as a songwriter. We have only ca.30 seats so priority will be given to UC personnel. Admission is $10; both concerts, $17. No other discounts will be available for this event. ============================== Alexander Bystritsky will sing his humorous songs at the Visual Arts Performance Space Saturday Nov.16 at 7 p.m. There is also a good prospect of getting exclusive visit by Vladimir Turiyansky in November.
