November 25, 1996. Vladimir Turiyansky sings at 7 p.m. at
the UCSD Visual Arts Performance Space. Turiyansky is a poet
and field geologist from Moscow, Russia known since mid-60's.
As a child, he followed his mother to exile after his father
disappeared in GULAG in late 30's. In his teens, Turiyansky
learned to play seven-stringed guitar from a felon nicknamed
"Knyaz'". Later he wrote such hits of student and tourist
folklore as "Montana", "Pitekantrops", "Geophysical Tango",
"Who can tell why we ran from our warm city homes", and many
other songs. I for one used to sing "Montana" in early 70's
as an anonymous folk song.
