Prof. Sergei Starostin, a linguist from Moscow, will speak at the UCSD linguistics department Thursday December 5 at 5 p.m. Dr. Starostin's work made a sensation in 70's when he established a relation between North Caucasian language families (Dagestani, Chechen, Ingush, Abkhazo-Adygean) and Sino-Tibetan, including Chinese. Starostin also made a number of important contributions in the study of Altaic (including Turkic) languages, Hindoeuropean accentology, and Nostratic language families, the latter being Hindoeuropean, Semitic, Hamitic, Uralic, Altaic, Tunguso-Mancurian and Dravidian). Prof. Starostin's talk is titled: Theory & Practice of Long-Range Comparison: The Case of Nostratic The talk will be given at the TV studio of Linguistics Department, 2148 McGill Hall, the hall being a concrete 5-floor structure where Linguistics and Psychology Depts. are located. It is adjacent to Applied Physics and Math building and can be reached by car from I-5 via La Jolla Village drive and North Torrey Pines Rd from which one has to turn to Scholars Drive at the 6-th traffic light.
